I liked that there was a prize element where the students <a href="https://express.adobe.com/page/EA1nqvGx2l9U8/" target="_blank">could win a classroom set of hero cards</a> and it tied in with Digital Citizenship Week (October 17-21). </div><div><br /></div><div>I teamed up with an elementary technology lab teacher and we decided to try it with one fifth grade class. </div><div><br /></div><div>We looked over the available templates and decided we liked the layout of the 6-8 template the best (because they had to list advice for staying safe online). </div><div><br /></div><div>One of the best things about these Adobe monthly challenge templates is that they can be modified. Since we had deployed Adobe as a school district all our names and contacts are under the "share" and "invite" option. <div><br /></div><div>We asked them to type their words first, then insert their graphics, then take and insert their picture (students have 1:1 laptops with a built in camera feature with timer), and finally change font and coloring if they wanted. </div><div><br /></div><div>We had about five out of the 18 students complete it during the time we had them. Many were "nearly" done. The computer lab teacher and I, throughout the day, tweaked the finished ones (mostly for spelling and spacing) and helped to finish the nearly done ones. There were about eight that we needed to still work with. Luckily the school has WIT time at the end of the day and we were able to grab all but three during this time to finish. </div><div><br /></div><div>All in all the project took much more time then we thought. It was unlikely a regular classroom teacher would have devoted all the necessary time to it, in and amongst all the other things they have to do during the day. It is definitely something a technology or computer lab teacher could tackle over a few sessions. FULL DISCLOSURE: I had to return to the school two more days to catch the entire class since we had students absent. Normally I would have called the project finished but we were submitting the cards to be published by Adobe and wanted all the students represented. </div><div><br /></div><div>We were very happy they turned out so cute and the kids are excited about the possibility of getting them printed by Adobe. </div><div><div><br /></div><div>Check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/rcesfoxes/posts/pfbid02aVzSNSn2N5KTEQqY5v7FcBiRnRrE6yJJGuNrQ5gALFzxw1ayANxeQvK7E1VE6J6jl" target="_blank">this Facebook post</a> of the student's hard work. We have several schools in our district who are <a href="https://www.leaderinme.org/" target="_blank">"Leader in Me"</a> schools and I asked a teacher if I could come in and make them for her open house (you don't need to be a "Leader in Me" school but I know they do a lot of goal setting and mission statements). She loved the idea!</p><p>I decided to use <a href="https://info.flip.com/" target="_blank">Flip</a> (formally Flipgrid) to do the recording. The web based program is free for educators and automatically generates the needed QR code.</p><p>We started on a Thursday. I pulled students into the hall to get a picture of them holding a <u>square piece of paper</u> prior to an ELA block. The paper acted as a place holder for the QR code (which is square) and ensured I got the correct hand spacing so the students looked like they were holding the QR code. I found a spot that didn't have anything in the background. The background was going to be removed and the program I use (<a href="http://remove.bg">remove.bg</a>) works best if the background is fairly neutral. This part went fairly fast.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwkckyLyH-6Hg0Dqn0n84oyrKBNy2s3fEAq49CzV6lOdI2iQEMcYfxteUGrN9Nb5kY527VvPdy35YdnvwsZkFwA_SGXhuh8YZTcxW8cCTuO2A8xgKW2g3zgeLt7hHAYkwd2eAxpX_x1X1bAR0OS2ueRm8y6MpUTTDbOeEbAk1D9K39YmgV55PXZDl/s631/blog1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="631" data-original-width="463" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwkckyLyH-6Hg0Dqn0n84oyrKBNy2s3fEAq49CzV6lOdI2iQEMcYfxteUGrN9Nb5kY527VvPdy35YdnvwsZkFwA_SGXhuh8YZTcxW8cCTuO2A8xgKW2g3zgeLt7hHAYkwd2eAxpX_x1X1bAR0OS2ueRm8y6MpUTTDbOeEbAk1D9K39YmgV55PXZDl/w470-h640/blog1.PNG" width="470" /></a></div><p>The teacher gave me her ELA block (90 minutes) to teach students how to use Flip to record, delete, use their graphics, find my instructions, etc. They joined my Flip easily with a code that is generated once I made a topic for them to post to. art teacher, <a href="https://twitter.com/MrMaltais">Darren Maltais</a>,
explaining how to use color gradients to make a night sky scene in Google
slides. I liked how easy it was and started looking for a way to use it in the
classroom. He has another video for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3IV_kuooYY" target="_blank">sunrises</a> but the idea is interchangeable. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Since April is poetry month, I thought I could tie it into a
writing activity and picked Haiku’s for the simplicity. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I targeted third graders and approached a teacher friend to
let me come in and try it with her group. It didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped
but I did learn a lot! I made <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrN5ZFrb8k8" target="_blank">a video of the entire process</a> if you want to check it out.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I naively thought we could do the entire project in one
90-minute ELA block. That includes all the tech components AND writing an
original haiku. We should have broken it up into two parts: 1. Writing the
haiku and 2. Adding in all the tech elements. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">To be fair students had only worked on haiku’s the day
before and had very little time to practice. We quickly realized that they
needed more modeling and practice in order to get them where we expected third
graders to be. Students did GREAT following the 5-7-5 syllabic requirements of a
haiku but they didn’t understand how to bring in the descriptive feeling
language associated with poetry. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">What students initially wrote was very basic: </p><p class="MsoNormal">The sun is pretty.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The sun is warm and very hot.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The sunrise is cool.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The teacher and I stopped the lesson and had the class
brainstorm some words, feelings, and activities associated with a sunrise or
sunset in order to redirect the writing a bit. While the students were getting frustrated with having to rewrite their poems, we were much happier with the results!</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjkqjIVw1kOuykAiNyACKCBT9rQOSmeR6VgvDBmgjRmn7Lkl58q-B3cW4zUcW4AFIAsyELilSw9M4ZNXSx1Yaqm19u4hcY12sT8h-57Jl_Atce7QAPd83h7qLvK0i_HJrtsZTv-fp_69uQrstWg96cR6rj7FK7nUoVDpofTZfjFGlMBv65ktRndT1h/s715/4.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="715" data-original-width="553" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjkqjIVw1kOuykAiNyACKCBT9rQOSmeR6VgvDBmgjRmn7Lkl58q-B3cW4zUcW4AFIAsyELilSw9M4ZNXSx1Yaqm19u4hcY12sT8h-57Jl_Atce7QAPd83h7qLvK0i_HJrtsZTv-fp_69uQrstWg96cR6rj7FK7nUoVDpofTZfjFGlMBv65ktRndT1h/w494-h640/4.PNG" width="494" /></a></div><br />On the tech end I decided it would be fun to put the student's silhouette on the page versus looking for a silhouette (which is what Mr. Maltais suggested...and to be fair that would have been easier). We started with taking a picture of each
student on their device and posed them to be a silhouette in the final version (recoloring them in Google Slides). I had looked up "looking away" silhouettes on a Google image search to get some posing ideas. </div><div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqdF0siz-sQmmae8j0bLFNwKeEVNdzQUvbiz-BLVmxFd6-JYkKpAH-brLsZ_NpNZgLGmAjTc2Tx7kYGf5zmtDJ61pr7OCSae1w2K-tJM2lP27tjjI-5udR-dvpgM_sPNRfVWMJ7sKfZ2HTecoJqXx-yf-kqdJSB71haMimiJzvFkwmOYCjRx-i80s5/s715/2.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="715" data-original-width="550" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqdF0siz-sQmmae8j0bLFNwKeEVNdzQUvbiz-BLVmxFd6-JYkKpAH-brLsZ_NpNZgLGmAjTc2Tx7kYGf5zmtDJ61pr7OCSae1w2K-tJM2lP27tjjI-5udR-dvpgM_sPNRfVWMJ7sKfZ2HTecoJqXx-yf-kqdJSB71haMimiJzvFkwmOYCjRx-i80s5/w492-h640/2.PNG" width="492" /></a></div><br />I had created a <a href="https://bit.ly/38AV1CY" target="_blank">template in Google Slides</a> for each child, which they opened from Google Classroom. We then picked the gradient colors to use as our background
color. We used <a href="https://color.adobe.com/explore">Adobe Color</a> to
find the color scheme as recommended by Mr. Maltais. As a group we recolored the Slides template with our Adobe
color scheme. Once they were done, we had them insert a transparent grass
silhouette.</div><div><br /></div><div>When we were done students ran their "silhouette" image through the site <a href="http://remove.bg">remove.bg</a> to get rid of the background and inserted it onto the page recoloring it to "dark4" with the "recolor" formatting option in Google Slides to get the silhouette effect. </div><div><br /></div><div>At this point all the tech components were done and students just had to type their poem (in our case they had to make them). If you had time you could have students add a moon or sun to the page for a fun added effect. </div><div><br /></div><div>They turned out adorably! The teacher is planning to make a hallway display out of them.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you attempt with your student, or on your own, I would love to see the poems. Intrigued, I read through the comments and helpfully someone posted <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zClEJl3FQrE&t=3543s" target="_blank">a link to the recorded "party"</a>. I normally scroll Twitter in bed so I spent an hour watching the entire video (much to my husbands annoyance 🤣).</p><p>The instructor <a href="https://twitter.com/EmmaCottier" target="_blank">Emma Cottier</a>, a middle school teacher in Canada, was the guest presenter and did an outstanding job of walking through the steps of creating portraits using Google Drawings. There were so many excellent tips. My favorites were changing the color of the neck to provide contrast, using the Zoom feature liberally, and continually moving the originating photo to the front as you work in sections. She also showed student work and gave examples of how to use it across the curriculum. </p><p>I gave it a try. I figure if sixth and seventh graders could do it so could I! I am not not unhappy with the finished result. I see a lot I could fix but decided it was good enough. In the video she states she lets students choose either a picture of themselves or a celebrity/someone they admire...which is a good idea. I remember being VERY self conscience as a middle school student and if I hated looking at myself in a mirror imagine spending a great deal of time zooming in and out of your photo...even as an adult I was getting self conscience of my teeth, nose and, chubby chin as I tried to outline them). </p><p>I shared this idea in our district EdTech Facebook group thinking it would make a great integrated technology project for an art teacher or for a computer lab or graphic design teacher. I am hoping someone takes the idea and runs with it. </p><p>If you give it a try I would love to see what you create. The project/challenge is based <a href="https://amzn.to/3sBMGqr" target="_blank">on a book</a> that explains how focusing on "one word" for the year helps to simplify what we really want to accomplish. In all fairness I haven't read the book but I did buy the <a href="https://amzn.to/3z2178A" target="_blank">student version</a> of it. It is a picture book meant to be read to students at the beginning of the school year so I am not sure it would work for a new calendar year. <p></p><p>The word I chose this year is "Notice". The idea is to "notice" more of the small things I tend to overlook. It is a reminder to myself that positive things, ideas, and actions don't always come in "big" sweeping moments. </p><p>Last year I chose "Focus" and ordered an Etsy <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/628767455/custom-washer-bracelet-washer-bracelet?ref=yr_purchases" target="_blank">washer bracelet</a> that I wore most of the year to help me remember. Etsy has <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/719391020/personalized-bracelet-for-women-gold-bar?ref=cart" target="_blank">fancier bracelets</a> if that is something that appeals to you. </p><p>I thought the overall idea of choosing "one word" would make a good back-to-school idea for the New Year. There are a ton of "one word" <a href="https://bit.ly/3qpHPGe" target="_blank">lesson plans</a>, <a href="https://www.happinessishomemade.net/word-of-the-year-ideas-one-little-word/" target="_blank">word lists</a>, and <a href="https://bit.ly/3qu8Kki" target="_blank">pictures</a> on line to help get you started. </p><p>I made my graphic above using Google Drawings in <a href="https://learninginhand.com/workshops" target="_blank">Tony Vincent's Classy Graphics online course</a>. I could have easily made it in Google Slides, Adobe Creative Cloud, or Canva as well. </p><p>In my Google Drawings template thought about what icon would represent "Notice" and landed on glasses (although I could have used magnifying glasses or binoculars as well). I googled "posters with glasses" to help generate some ideas and came across this retro looking poster which I used as my color inspiration for my graphic. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-68844459-7fff-ccd9-34e3-7c02821cd9eb"><img height="629" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/HH-JQ9vz9xF4pdxbv5n8QU0BVcya21v4j4KiEbsxXe4ULQNC-9-09swVNd70IX28Z48K8pOAWWMKy0J4oJd8p5F_p3eA8f8wMdxkHwB0meMwff10rgq4qEghij6PKzqaODctrKn0Kwf7bg=w640-h629" width="640" /></span></p><p><span>Students can easily do the same thing (they may need to brainstorming icon ideas with their classmates). Their representation of their word doesn't have to be digital it can be done on paper with their reasons for the word on the back. It would make a very cute hallway display. </span></p><p><span>A friend of mine made her "One Word" graphic for her word "push". She used hand icons to representing pushing and I liked that she included what that meant for her in her hands.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhl1a7lQCEP-cBZdNLLHm2sY-hsezY-0y15normQIo5zWeFf7wwK76I71g2uLXCDy_c-PPnuQW1gGmoH3da_kqy88ECmF-x_YsMvo-xEcL1EDS5m5LzVey-bLRhXdYbPkkgQUANN7L-LwOp6jiHwat57XmkfKW7Co-HwjocsbhicVuHYR_wSGHG8oVI=s960" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhl1a7lQCEP-cBZdNLLHm2sY-hsezY-0y15normQIo5zWeFf7wwK76I71g2uLXCDy_c-PPnuQW1gGmoH3da_kqy88ECmF-x_YsMvo-xEcL1EDS5m5LzVey-bLRhXdYbPkkgQUANN7L-LwOp6jiHwat57XmkfKW7Co-HwjocsbhicVuHYR_wSGHG8oVI=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is my attempt at using <a href="https://www.adobe.com/education/express/" target="_blank">Adobe Creative Cloud</a> (free for educators and we have it deployed district wide for students and teachers). It is an excellent online class if you are looking for something fun and creative to do. I have actually taken all of his classes and they are all OUTSTANDING. I made the graphic above in his class as one of my assignments. <p></p><p>He shares so many tools and sites with classmates and one great website he highlighted was <a href="http://cleanup.pictures">cleanup.pictures</a>. It is a site that can remove ELEMENTS from a picture. I have heard of <a href="https://www.remove.bg/" target="_blank">sites where you can remove the background</a> of a picture but not an element of a picture.</p><p>It is a simple tool to use. You simply upload the picture and then use the brush to erase an element. The system AI does the rest. Here is an example of removing a cone from a group picture. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiEojCTMFMh9WsC0eUKmRtNAY1f0My_S9eITQX3-gfQ3q1cFA5papMzkQ76gC9VZA-NsZfkXoUvbJmIWCHtontN5dKFekkweY_zmIkcCeaQv74Ej0lhCPR2pGULvjGC7zp3ROZ7AB9FX9TYCiEO1mhiELTUJtGCCcqFyhSdeUGlmQBxX3LvHjKdDNkN=s616" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="616" data-original-width="409" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiEojCTMFMh9WsC0eUKmRtNAY1f0My_S9eITQX3-gfQ3q1cFA5papMzkQ76gC9VZA-NsZfkXoUvbJmIWCHtontN5dKFekkweY_zmIkcCeaQv74Ej0lhCPR2pGULvjGC7zp3ROZ7AB9FX9TYCiEO1mhiELTUJtGCCcqFyhSdeUGlmQBxX3LvHjKdDNkN=w424-h640" width="424" /></a></div>Sometimes you have use the brush multiple times to get rid of an element. The instructor in the video did it by herself, and I tried, but it was really nice to have a second pair of hands. While we were working we thought students should be paired together by different book characters. In our sample we used the book "Charlotte's Web". My co-worker picked Charlotte as her character and I picked Fern. We came up with five items that would work for each character and discussed what it represented about them. We both liked the collaborative element of folding the shirts and talking/rough draft writing out the five elements because the drawing and writing were going to be solo activities. Collaboration also fit nicely into some of the academic standards we were addressing with this project. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the writing piece we wanted student to think beyond the basic "I drew a stool because Fern sat on one in the book" and more about what sitting on stool day after day told us about Fern's character. This was my sample writing piece justifying my elements (the write up will done in Google Docs and printed and taped to the back of the shirt...but also could be hand written on a sheet of paper).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kd_jZLIaWsk/YatRyZyoQaI/AAAAAAAAFNc/G-4UZiYCS9Ung8ICK-xK4UlwEuoClVA5QCNcBGAsYHQ/s576/Capture.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="400" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kd_jZLIaWsk/YatRyZyoQaI/AAAAAAAAFNc/G-4UZiYCS9Ung8ICK-xK4UlwEuoClVA5QCNcBGAsYHQ/w444-h640/Capture.PNG" width="444" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">To bring in the holiday element we were requiring a minimum of five illustrations to be woven in among the book elements. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My co-worker isn't very crafty so I drew the icons/elements representing both characters based off our lists. The Noun Project is a site full of simple easily duplicatable icons. It is free to search which is all we are using the site for. I actually have, and love, the paid <a href="https://thenounproject.com/for-edu/" target="_blank">educator version</a> ($20 for the year) since I make a lot of graphics for work.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We suspect this project will take two to three class periods to complete depending on the length of the ELA block. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is the problem we are anticipating:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--gP74FQZzyk/YatVEc0-iBI/AAAAAAAAFNs/Hge_ET-dn44SjMX9BQvJn2uoESlmDZq0ACNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0738.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--gP74FQZzyk/YatVEc0-iBI/AAAAAAAAFNs/Hge_ET-dn44SjMX9BQvJn2uoESlmDZq0ACNcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_0738.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>We aren't sure if we will have enough white bulletin board paper for each student (the school we are working with had much less white paper than pictured on this roll). The shirts will just be smaller than the shown samples. It allows students to create interactive multimedia ebooks based off classroom assignments. The FREE version allows teachers to have one library with 40 books. Teachers can archive libraries and delete books and reset the library count to 40 as needed. Obviously the ideal situation is to get a <a href="https://bookcreator.com/pricing/" target="_blank">classroom, school, or district subscription</a> and it is something to recommend to administrators, PTA's, or even make a grant pitch for. <div><br /></div><div>I am a certified Google Trainer and Book Creator has very generously offered up their 1,000 book library deal to anyone with that designation, which makes it very nice for training purposes.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here are a few books I have made for demonstration purposes:</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/EDaQgy7bP3WHC23eVFPb0dg9EQE3/Kn1w1w86Q1SiJedKd8HOig" target="_blank">Plastic Bags</a> </div><div><a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/EDaQgy7bP3WHC23eVFPb0dg9EQE3/-qnw4-p1SY2PaSLXiX7m1A" target="_blank">Showing Respect in the Halls</a> (Comic Example)</div><div><a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/EDaQgy7bP3WHC23eVFPb0dg9EQE3/bxQzzpZHRM-4NwclAGSVxw" target="_blank">Choose Your Own Adventure </a>Style Book</div><div><a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/EDaQgy7bP3WHC23eVFPb0dg9EQE3/FsJnWmwYToKgLRr05wSPww" target="_blank">Biography</a> (Bessie Coleman)</div><div><a href="https://www.facebook.com/rcesfoxes/posts/1248467665362459" target="_blank">Community Helpers</a> (link to Facebook post...this is a project I completed with a kindergarten class)</div><div><br /></div><div>Because I love Book Creator so much I do <u><b>a lot</b></u> of training with students. teachers, and at various tech conferences. Keep in mind that with students I usually break up the module into four training blocks (40-50 minutes each) with the fifth day moving students into the comic "book" option. Depending on the speed of the class we get to play with the comic book option on day five or we just finish the sample book as noted below.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the span of four instructional blocks (either with a media specialist, computer lab teacher, or classroom teacher) we complete the following: </div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c4TYetJkM3g/YaV2vdzlbqI/AAAAAAAAFLs/2I7hhOroLlQiyhB86xCtqJb58c3wZ9GqQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/Slide1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c4TYetJkM3g/YaV2vdzlbqI/AAAAAAAAFLs/2I7hhOroLlQiyhB86xCtqJb58c3wZ9GqQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Slide1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N1WApGqBpYQ/YaV2vi2bUOI/AAAAAAAAFLo/dHQ2o-66ibkpV6USeIy-gcpofADAGSlcwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/Slide2.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N1WApGqBpYQ/YaV2vi2bUOI/AAAAAAAAFLo/dHQ2o-66ibkpV6USeIy-gcpofADAGSlcwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Slide2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr6UA_NE-bo/YaV2sP7QQcI/AAAAAAAAFLk/mHzA9OiRNjwCVHI1N0ufq62oMcTxOLAgACLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/Slide3.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr6UA_NE-bo/YaV2sP7QQcI/AAAAAAAAFLk/mHzA9OiRNjwCVHI1N0ufq62oMcTxOLAgACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Slide3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sOETLh_CdpA/YaV2wZ90y1I/AAAAAAAAFLw/4205xp-F2LUNCiMbUh2CpjILEaH24T2ZACLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/Slide4.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sOETLh_CdpA/YaV2wZ90y1I/AAAAAAAAFLw/4205xp-F2LUNCiMbUh2CpjILEaH24T2ZACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Slide4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X_GPWFq-Fz4/YaV2wntQBdI/AAAAAAAAFL0/ogrZIn3Epec8Gm7QJnHpTVbSqdC094-4gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/Slide5.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X_GPWFq-Fz4/YaV2wntQBdI/AAAAAAAAFL0/ogrZIn3Epec8Gm7QJnHpTVbSqdC094-4gCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Slide5.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />Here is <a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/EDaQgy7bP3WHC23eVFPb0dg9EQE3/RAZhsxIDQWGuwCNeaf6zlw" target="_blank">the link to the finished book</a>. Lions are a pretty safe subject, as most students know something about them, and I can highlight nonfiction text features as we move along. After these four days students learn enough about the website to be competent but, as I tell teachers, media specialists, and computer lab instructors you still need to teach the hidden skills of pairing like facts, keeping facts simple and clear, matching text and pictures, etc. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you are struggling with the "how" part of introducing Book Creator to students, please feel free to grab my lesson structure above and watch as students grasp the basic concept of adding, editing, and embellishing text and media within the program. She got the idea and template from <a href="https://www.mrspark.org/tech-tips" target="_blank">Ester Park</a> and ran with it sharing how she used her stickers with students to provide engaging feedback. </p><p>Ms. Park provides a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2madvUlHn4" target="_blank">video overview</a> of the process and I created <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HHvqUWAD435X691YZnOGlnP9QUK7TQ_U/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">my own video</a>, just in case her video ever went down, and to share more specific details with teachers in my district. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/C2madvUlHn4" width="320" youtube-src-id="C2madvUlHn4"></iframe></div><br /><p>In all my samples I used Ms. Park's sticker template. If you wanted to change it up they seem pretty simple to make. It looks like she did her wording in another program and inserted them as a picture but I used Google fonts with Google Word Art for the most part in my sample above. </p><p>I've stepped out the process below for creating the stickers. It seems complicated but really isn't once you do the first couple.</p><p>1. Open, or create, a template in Google Slides. Here is the link to <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/16iGloxsGos4R2_8fgiZuKbpuzn4IOeCZNaZEl2qCCOo/edit#slide=id.g8ffad287a4_0_27" target="_blank">Ms. Park's template</a>. </p><p>2. Make a short video of what you want in the sticker. Use a neutral background. I have used a white wall and a green screen background both work. To film I used my computer camera and I have also used my cell phone camera.</p><p>3. Upload the video to <a href="http://unscreen.com">unscreen.com</a> to remove the background. It is a FREE site! Download the finished video to your computer.</p><p>4. Insert the video into the sticker template and use the cropping and masking tools to get it to fit the way you want (watching the video may help if you are not familiar with masking to a shape). </p><p>5. Once you have your sticker made you will need to use some screencasting software, that allows you to save as a GIF. You will film a short loop of the sticker on Google Slides. I use, and love <a href="https://screencast-o-matic.com/" target="_blank">Screencast-O-Matic</a>. The free version gives you 15 minutes of recording time, you can select the area you want to record, and save your finished video as a GIF. </p><p>6. You will then take your GIF and upload it to <a href="https://www12.lunapic.com/" target="_blank">Luna Pics</a> (FREE site) where you will use their circle crop tool to finish your sticker (I would recommend watching the video for that step). </p><p>I would recommend making a bunch at a time since it isn't really convenient to make them as needed. Mine are saved in a "GIF Button" folder in "My Picture" file. I have a series of "positive" and "needs improvement" stickers to pull from when needed. </p><p>If you want curved font in your sticker. You can use the site <a href="https://picfont.com/" target="_blank">PicFont</a> (FREE). Check out this graphic from <a href="https://learninginhand.com/" target="_blank">Tony Vincent </a>on how to use the site to curve your font.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mQ1rLbY85ao/YYvintOHkWI/AAAAAAAAFJ8/HMy2Uv0GrtYm-yCE6CvcFPV-lujlFrazACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Curved%2BText%2Bwith%2BPicFont.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mQ1rLbY85ao/YYvintOHkWI/AAAAAAAAFJ8/HMy2Uv0GrtYm-yCE6CvcFPV-lujlFrazACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/Curved%2BText%2Bwith%2BPicFont.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>If you make some fun GIF stickers I would LOVE to see them. It is free with in-app purchases but you may have to wade through quite a few advertisements. I never paid for any features. It is not super intuitive to use so I made <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aWoF9-ILRR1aDc8oOgSFKZ4sqwjPeQuv/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">this short 2 minute video</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took screen shots of the finished cartoons versus saving to my camera roll and used the editing feature on my phone to crop around the pictures. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aATGxqn6a2s/YQR6SY0AScI/AAAAAAAAFE8/iZQnhBb-LjILLRzL57vNfk2jczjbsX-kgCLcBGAsYHQ/s960/1a.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aATGxqn6a2s/YQR6SY0AScI/AAAAAAAAFE8/iZQnhBb-LjILLRzL57vNfk2jczjbsX-kgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J_O4pOMMfRQ/YQR6VE_bCrI/AAAAAAAAFFA/z694hlRUb2k-I4E3YqRWNsDP_kcPsdXYQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/c2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="634" data-original-width="640" height="317" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J_O4pOMMfRQ/YQR6VE_bCrI/AAAAAAAAFFA/z694hlRUb2k-I4E3YqRWNsDP_kcPsdXYQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/c2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After all the pictures were "cartooned" I emailed them all back to my laptop. From there I used the site <a href="http://remove.bg">remove.bg</a> to get rid of the background.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I found a comic panel layout online that I liked with nine panels to use as the background (searching "9 Panel comic layout"). Once I had the panel in place I started inserting and tweaking the pictures using Google Slides. I would duplicate the slides so I could adjust a layout without losing the previous one. Honestly I could have created the background myself, and was prepared to do that, until I found a template I liked (which saved me a lot of time). If you have several people on your team/department Google image search "cartoon head shots" to see other layouts that could be used instead of a comic panel. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The name tags I created using white text boxes with drop shadowing and the Google font "Naucha". These are skills I learned taking <a href="https://learninginhand.com/workshops" target="_blank">Tony Vincent's</a> "Classy Creations" online course (which I highly recommend). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I did run the finished product by my teammates allowing them to change pictures if they wanted and I got a lot of helpful suggestions. Jamboard slides (or frames) are hidden so it is slightly more difficult to accidentally delete slides (this make collaborating easier). Jamboard offers a drawing and sticky note tool which Google Slides does not. </p><p>Unfortunately Jamboard has very limited text sizing, font, and color so I actually set up the names, school, and year in Google Slides and used those as the uneditable backgrounds in Jamboard. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q0FVexTqzXw/YJrMaezqSiI/AAAAAAAAE-s/ccE-6h4nqucHwSj1DsJpKAgvGT5uD-b0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1145/Capture.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="643" data-original-width="1145" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q0FVexTqzXw/YJrMaezqSiI/AAAAAAAAE-s/ccE-6h4nqucHwSj1DsJpKAgvGT5uD-b0wCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Capture.PNG" width="640" /></a></div><br />Once the project is complete the teacher can edit and move things around if it needs to be "cleaned up" before printing. <p></p><p>For my "how to" instructions with screenshots click on <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wSRI9VbvyzC-jY3oxJnNYoGvJu90Zi0k/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">THIS LINK</a>. </p><p>If you use this idea I would love to hear your feedback! She had them making <a href="https://info.flipgrid.com/" target="_blank">Flipgrip</a> videos of what they learned and one way the animal mouth they chose would be "useful" for them. We could have also had them type or write their response and then added their pictures which would have been nice. Flipgrid allows you to add a picture but I was still working on editing during their lesson so they didn't have them available. </div><div><br /></div><div>I took three shots of the student: straight on, to the right, and to the left. That way I had some options when trying to "fit" the mouth in. Try this "If I had a pot of Gold" activity.<p></p><p>The fun, and techie part, requires students to take a picture of themselves, use the site <a href="http://remove.bg">remove.bg</a> to remove the background and edit around the face, and then layer it within the hat and beard clipart. </p><p>To encourage more writing and detail I made the "pot of gold" cursed so that in order to get what you want you have to do something nice with the some of the gold and tell me what and why. It was designed for self-contained 4th and 5th grade classes. Third grade teachers would need to review and possibly modify.<div><br /></div><div>There are 12 activities. I made sure that each activity had an accountability piece. I used a variety of free programs, as well as ones we have available to us in our district. </div><div><br /></div><div>1. Create a Six Word Story based on a Thanksgiving image. I linked a video from Discovery Education explaining what a six word story is (we have a DE subscription). There are some six word story videos on YouTube that could replace the Discovery Education resource or a teacher could simply explain and model the process.</div><div>2. Read a short Thanksgiving fiction piece in ReadWorks (free to educators) and respond to the question set.</div><div>3. Mystery Picture Math - Thanksgiving Word Problems (I created it in Google Sheets)</div><div>4. Answer a "Would you Rather" Thanksgiving writing prompt.</div><div>5. Watch Flocabulary's Thanksgiving rap and answer the question set. We have a district subscription to Flocabulary so this may need to be modified.</div><div>6. Mystery Picture Math - Thanksgiving Multiplication Practice (I created it in Google Sheets). </div><div>7. Watch a Thanksgiving read aloud and answer a corresponding question set on Quizizz.</div><div>8. Complete an emoji story retell of the read aloud.</div><div>9. Watch how parade balloons are made and answer a design challenge question.</div><div>10. Watch how the Macy's Day parade will be modified this year. Answer the pro and con question.</div><div>11. Complete an acrostic as directed.</div><div>12. Complete a drawing as directed. </div><div><br /></div><div>The idea is that this slide show could be given to students the day before our Thanksgiving break, via Google Classroom, and they are given the day to complete all of the activities (could be in order...could be completed randomly depending on the teacher). </div><div><br /></div><div>I created it for our teachers hoping to model how you can use various resources within one Google slideshow to give students a full day of activities on those "days before holiday breaks" particularly when working virtually. </div>Eve Heatonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342106467437789200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4239061985324296356.post-70198223407392932842020-11-16T17:00:00.001-05:002020-11-16T17:00:06.989-05:00Online Review Game Buzzer<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xfg9tkyKA0w/X7LGtqt-t0I/AAAAAAAAEww/-a5YZnFg0aQ_XCLlqtTsLjOkCkcfUWQnQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1140/Cosmobuzz.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="636" data-original-width="1140" height="358" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xfg9tkyKA0w/X7LGtqt-t0I/AAAAAAAAEww/-a5YZnFg0aQ_XCLlqtTsLjOkCkcfUWQnQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h358/Cosmobuzz.PNG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><a href="http://Cosmobuzz.net">Cosmobuzz.net</a> is a great FREE tool for hosting online review games with students via Zoom or Google Meet.</p><p>It is basic but does the job of recording who buzzed in first and displaying student answers. </p><p>Our district had it blocked for students (it was classified as "gaming") but after reviewing the site I put in a recommendation for it with my full justification and review and it was unblocked.</p><p>Give it a try with students using <a href="https://parade.com/944584/parade/trivia-questions-for-kids/" target="_blank">simple trivia</a> to learn how the site works and then start building your own academic review games.</p>Eve Heatonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342106467437789200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4239061985324296356.post-9288185679874166002020-10-27T17:00:00.003-04:002020-10-27T17:00:01.807-04:00Paint by Numbers - Google Forms<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zm9qEKWhFfo/X5gohRWKwNI/AAAAAAAAEvs/VUVHGGa4HkoL36onFMoASZlgy3yom1QJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s478/Form.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="232" data-original-width="478" height="310" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zm9qEKWhFfo/X5gohRWKwNI/AAAAAAAAEvs/VUVHGGa4HkoL36onFMoASZlgy3yom1QJgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h310/Form.gif" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I ran across this clever idea <a href="https://twitter.com/bradjdale/status/1319785489096998917" target="_blank">on Twitter</a> for using Google Forms to have students complete a paint-by-number picture by answering questions. </p><p>Brad Dale posted the directions and a video <a href="https://www.timetotalktech.com/2020/10/take-your-google-form-to-next-level.html" target="_blank">on his blog</a> which was very easy to follow. </p><p>Since we are so close to Halloween I tried it using a couple of Halloween paint-by-number pictures. I used third grade multiplication word problems, at the request of one of the teachers, who saw my re-tweet on Twitter. </p><p>I've included links to both Google Forms I made. You will be forced to make a copy but from there you can edit the questions if you would like. </p><p>- <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1yJVSNgnbPeq4I7itvmF0ey8wGY5t-lBHyn2QZEnZzDM/copy?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Pumpkin Picture</a> (click to link)</p><p>- <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1fsPf4oLyngGSnOjO34_A1x5gQIC-NQhdY8elAYRJ6_o/copy?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Witch Picture</a> (click to link) </p><p>Here were a couple of my thoughts as I completing this activity:</p><p>- The paint-by-number website only offers a max of nine colors. Which means only nine questions on the form. I would have liked the option for more questions. I made a note to look for more detailed options on other sites. </p><p>- The paint-by-number website was glitchy (for me). I was able to "paint" several areas quickly and then the system slowed down. I found closing out the site and reopening it helped. The site remembered where I was at in the painting process and just the acting of closing the site (not the picture) and reopening it made it paint the areas that I had clicked on previously. </p><p>The teacher I made and shared these with was happy and planning to share them with students on their virtual day (we are on an AA/Virtual/BB hybrid schedule for right now). </p><p>If you make any, please share links in the comments below or tag me on Twitter <a href="https://twitter.com/atechcoachlife" target="_blank">@atechcoachlife</a>. </p><p><br /></p>Eve Heatonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342106467437789200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4239061985324296356.post-73226336033191811892020-10-26T19:44:00.000-04:002020-10-26T19:44:03.288-04:00Emoji Summaries<p> <a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nS-aOt1pKBA/X5dUbQrkSQI/AAAAAAAAEvM/PCPZMcHdxXYVm9mAguj8cPFfqZqobyTtwCLcBGAsYHQ/s908/First%2BNext%2BLast%2BSummary.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="507" data-original-width="908" height="358" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nS-aOt1pKBA/X5dUbQrkSQI/AAAAAAAAEvM/PCPZMcHdxXYVm9mAguj8cPFfqZqobyTtwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h358/First%2BNext%2BLast%2BSummary.PNG" width="640" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ilmtYTmSM2E/X5dUrqVVtTI/AAAAAAAAEvc/hMCTHTlYdgI2199PB1w-q7EQ_AdjTtkRwCLcBGAsYHQ/s960/Emoji%2BReport%2B-%2BTemplate.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ilmtYTmSM2E/X5dUrqVVtTI/AAAAAAAAEvc/hMCTHTlYdgI2199PB1w-q7EQ_AdjTtkRwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/Emoji%2BReport%2B-%2BTemplate.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">😍 I ran across <a href="https://twitter.com/historysandoval/status/1318949060015894528" target="_blank">this awesome Twitter post</a> by <a href="https://twitter.com/historysandoval" target="_blank">Amanda Sandoval</a> last week and LOVED that she had her students summarizing The Bill of Rights using emojis. I've done it in grades 3-5 and the children love it! I came up with the idea after taking <a href="https://learninginhand.com/workshops" target="_blank">Tony Vincent's Classy Creations course.</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Think of it as a high tech Frayer Model. The idea is to reinforce vocabulary with the use of images. In this case: found GIF's, created GIF's, found pictures, and created pictures. It introduces children to new tech skills and sites (<a href="https://brush.ninja/" target="_blank">Brush Ninja</a> and <a href="https://canvas.apps.chrome/" target="_blank">Chrome Canvas</a>)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As a teacher I go over the activity with students and we do the first four slides together. This works well in a face-to-face environment. In a virtual environment you may have to adjust. I would recommend making a video for each of the first four slides so students can reference and complete them on their own. Google Slides allows you to "house" videos off the side of the slide so it doesn't interfere with work on the actual slide which makes it a handy place to store short "how to" videos.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For a complete project overview, <a href="http://youtu.be/qb4kIpHubfs?hd=1" target="_blank">check out my video on YouTube</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="394" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qb4kIpHubfs" width="475" youtube-src-id="qb4kIpHubfs"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you wish to use the template <a href="https://bit.ly/3ifzzm8" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a>. <br />
Zoom offers some limited canned virtual backgrounds for teachers to use and the ability to upload your own pictures. Last year, when I taught a <a href="http://sciencenotebooking.blogspot.com/2020/09/teaching-sketchnoting-online.html" target="_blank">sketchnoting class online</a>, I changed my background out daily and the kids enjoyed seeing what the picture was going to be.<br />
<br />
I loved this personalized Zoom background <a href="https://twitter.com/lakershughes/status/1301908928750481414?s=21&fbclid=IwAR0GaA_2-buAulKv8W17lnve8sK8VmmSQAYkdqv00uSmT3z6brraOAqn7Bo" target="_blank">a teacher posted on Twitter</a> and shared it with staff, who instantly wanted to know how to make your own customized background.<br />

<br />
I made a very simple customized agenda background and put together <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTx7b-PHL3k&feature=youtu.be&hd=1" target="_blank">a quick video</a> to share with teachers who are working hard to get everything set up for the first day of school on Tuesday.<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6k3SGnXeLzI/X1A4I_jMR0I/AAAAAAAAErg/Chk8EUBR5hoakEZNzNYlxHl2CUUOQsQJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Title.PNG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="554" height="492" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6k3SGnXeLzI/X1A4I_jMR0I/AAAAAAAAErg/Chk8EUBR5hoakEZNzNYlxHl2CUUOQsQJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Title.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
Last spring, the second week we were out for distance learning, a friend asked if I would teach some middle school students how to Sketchnote online. She said it would be voluntary and most likely be a small group. I agreed, because I wanted to see how difficult it would be to teach sketchnoting online...for a week. I had five engaged children...all girls...who didn't mind being "guinea pigs" for a daily "Lunch and Learn" session.<br />
<br />
Shortly afterward a teacher who had booked me to introduce sketchnoting to her class, prior to the pandemic, asked if I would consider doing it virtually (she taught 4th grade). I agreed, based on my earlier "success" and ended up with between 15-17 students.<br />
<br />
In order to get links and material to her students I had her added me as a co-teacher in Google Classroom. I used a 1 hour block of time and most sessions ended between 50-60 minutes.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Monday</b> - I did an introduction presentation with built in challenges (<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1EY-S1oNyjl1l_xb47cIFAcxMzt69zAUjPlMs7zGGN-E/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">copy of presentation</a> with information in the notes area - users will need to click on "file" and then "make a copy" if you want to add it to your Drive to edit). I used Kami to draw on a PDF version of my presentation while in "share screen" mode with Zoom. Our district has a paid subscription but the free version would work for this (see video below - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-4hXtNSg2I&feature=youtu.be&hd=1" target="_blank">DIRECT LINK TO VIDEO</a>).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m-4hXtNSg2I" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>Tuesday</b> - (<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1K0sdarId_OR0dzCkHhhO-9HiqO-cw1BKknsHJrtrsiY/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">copy of presentation</a> with information in the notes area - users will need to click on "file" and then "make a copy" if you want to add it to your Drive to edit) We worked on Doodle Dictionaries (a dictionary of pictures that might be useful in sketchnoting). Students had to have two sheets of paper and something to write with (we used front and back). This was exclusively a drawing day. They copied what I was drawing on the screen (again using Kami as described in the video above). The first page I called the "rectangle series" because everything started as a rectangle and became something else (we completed drawings in all eight squares we grid out).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OXWSLBVZ_h0/X1AY1zJOfBI/AAAAAAAAEqg/pDU7Rd6m1CcPTUxhoEQX5mgspnD2VU48gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Rectangles.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="431" data-original-width="628" height="438" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OXWSLBVZ_h0/X1AY1zJOfBI/AAAAAAAAEqg/pDU7Rd6m1CcPTUxhoEQX5mgspnD2VU48gCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Rectangles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I learned how to draw all these pictures with the help of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-Sketchnote-Step-Step-Teachers/dp/1733646868/ref=sr_1_1?crid=W9JKLQX095WQ&dchild=1&keywords=sylvia+duckworth&qid=1599084829&sprefix=duckworth+sy,aps,273&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Sylvia Duckworth's How to Sketchnote</a> book which is a fabulous and highly recommended resource if you are looking to get started with sketchnoting. Once we were done with the "rectangle series" students flipped their paper over, grid it out, and we worked on the "circle series" (which were all faces and facial expressions). I kept the 8 block grid and just skipped the nervous looking face bottom row center.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hhniieRnMqU/X1AZrBwzb5I/AAAAAAAAEqo/-n9Ygg0Gfc8TN80NPo-FN4kv_9odZpQhACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Circles.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="431" data-original-width="620" height="442" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hhniieRnMqU/X1AZrBwzb5I/AAAAAAAAEqo/-n9Ygg0Gfc8TN80NPo-FN4kv_9odZpQhACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Circles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We got another sheet of paper, grid it out, and worked on the "i people" series (slightly fancier version of the stick figures). I picked eight of all the ones you see below. I called them the i series because each figure started with a block lower case i and we just added arms and legs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6r8BrrtaQnw/X1AaPDMaUFI/AAAAAAAAEq0/rJQQ9TRzk-INH7uTqwu1nJFct2xJA8LKACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Stick1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="440" data-original-width="579" height="486" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6r8BrrtaQnw/X1AaPDMaUFI/AAAAAAAAEq0/rJQQ9TRzk-INH7uTqwu1nJFct2xJA8LKACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Stick1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2EI0uiuHzmU/X1AaRDEshKI/AAAAAAAAEq4/PtrHN6GB3mQzxGYSi92Wzfy-s7MDvuVKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Stick2.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="466" data-original-width="630" height="472" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2EI0uiuHzmU/X1AaRDEshKI/AAAAAAAAEq4/PtrHN6GB3mQzxGYSi92Wzfy-s7MDvuVKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Stick2.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Kids had just enough energy to do one more series of general pictures where they got to guess what I was drawing as we went along. It was fast paced. Sketchnoting is not about dilly dallying and taking a ton of time to complete something. I explain that and kids were hyper focused because I wasn't slowing down for them (I use the same approach in the classroom). It helps to stress nobody is getting a grade and it doesn't have to be perfect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R-49Q7-KdJo/X1AeK0SBMjI/AAAAAAAAErI/OYZrp7vbdhQza9s3QwMR1DART6dZOIemgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/GeneralDraw.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="426" data-original-width="622" height="438" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R-49Q7-KdJo/X1AeK0SBMjI/AAAAAAAAErI/OYZrp7vbdhQza9s3QwMR1DART6dZOIemgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/GeneralDraw.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Wednesday (no pre-made presentation)</b> - Children needed two pieces of paper. I showed them the <a href="https://thenounproject.com/" target="_blank">Noun Project</a> website and how you could search for icons. The idea is if you didn't know how to draw something you could look it up there. The site requires a license to download but not to look. I told them they may need that site later during the activity. I shared my screen with students and we watched a short read aloud using <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/StorylineOnlineSAF/videos" target="_blank">Storyline Online</a> on YouTube (I like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j0OY3236jw" target="_blank">Harry the Dirty Dog</a>).<br />
<br />
When using Zoom to show a YouTube video do not forget to check this "share computer sound" when you select your screen or students won't be able to hear the video.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WnywmcVzjdM/X0-A7tQVKbI/AAAAAAAAEqU/AAVsr-hN99UbBoz6sfFcKqTKeTQ54QmLwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Zoom%2B-%2BShared%2BVideo%2BSound.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WnywmcVzjdM/X0-A7tQVKbI/AAAAAAAAEqU/AAVsr-hN99UbBoz6sfFcKqTKeTQ54QmLwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Zoom%2B-%2BShared%2BVideo%2BSound.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After the video, I had students number their paper 1-6 and they had to summarize the story in six sentences. Each sentence had to have between 5 and 10 words. In the classroom they lost points if they went over or under. This exercise was designed to get children to focus on the main parts of the story and be concise in their summaries. In the class I paired them up...online they were on their own. You can eliminate the word count but definitely keep them at six sentences (I call it my "six sentence summary"). I gave them 10 minutes to work on it. <i>To be honest, students are not that great at summarizing in six sentences because they tend to focus on the detailed play-by-play. In the classroom I suggest they start with the last sentence and then work their way up. If the work from the top down they get to the last sentence and find they got too bogged down in the minutia to write their last sentence.</i> If they finished their summaries before everyone else I told them they could start drawing next to their sentences. I encouraged them to use the <a href="https://thenounproject.com/" target="_blank">Noun Project site</a> if they couldn't draw something...like a dog...or a brush. If they were done with that they could get a clean sheet of paper, decide on their structure, and make a "pretty version" of their sketch.<br />
<br />
<b>Thursday (no pre-made presentation)</b> - This was the digital doodling day. They all had to bring their sketch from yesterday. We used Kami because we have a district subscription and I can make a Kami assignment in Google Classroom, which makes it easy for students to turn in finished work in from the Kami site. I sent them a blank page in Google Classroom, everyone opened their copy in Kami. This option is not available if you are using the free version. Students <u>can</u> access the site on their own either through the Kami extension or the direct link to their login site -<a href="https://web.kamihq.com/" target="_blank"> https://web.kamihq.com/</a>. Children would need to sign in with their Google account or an email in order to use.<br />

Kids work in another browser so they aren't looking at my screen (I have Kami up and I am working as well if they click back to me) but I also have a YouTube playlist of clean songs playing on another tab so we can listen to music while we work. I tried to turn over share screen privileges so volunteers could show us their drawings but it didn't work for me with either class. I had them turn in their finished sketches into their Google Classroom assignments. This allowed me to see them and share them the next day.<br />

<b>Friday (no pre-made presentation)</b> - Participants needed four sheets of paper, a pencil, a thin black marker, and colored pencils. I wanted them to use front and back of the paper but it was difficult for them to flip between front and back to do the activity. I reviewed the week and explained I was going to be conducting some sketchnoting speed drills. The goal was to get two sketchnotes done in 30 minutes.<br />
<br />
For the first sketchnote, I showed them a video. I like "A Kid Explains History" videos and have used his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YAPVs233Hc" target="_blank">Harriet Tubman </a>and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEMbPLR1vrA" target="_blank">Ancient Egypt</a> videos in the past. I have them take notes while they watch the video. I do not pause the video...remember I am trying to build up their skill and speed.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5YAPVs233Hc" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>
<br />
They put that sheet of paper with the notes aside and get a clean sheet of paper. I then have them click on a high interest <a href="https://www.ducksters.com/" target="_blank">Duckster's article</a> I have either put into Google Classroom or linked in the Zoom chat. I give them 10 minutes to read and summarize on their paper (I will give them extra time if they all ask for it but not much). You could use any "kid friendly" article site. Other popular sites include Newsela and ReadWorks.<br />
<br />
Once they are done they are given 30 minutes to complete the two sketchnotes on their clean sheets of paper (so they transfer over their notes as well), I remind them to go into The Noun Project and look up icons if they aren't sure how to draw something. Some students don't want to rewrite their notes on the clean sheet of paper and sketch on their original notes...I let it slide. If they are done before the 30 minutes are up I have them outline everything with a thin black marker, if they have one, and color the finished sketch. I have them share their sketches and the information they wrote, if we have time. Not everyone wants to share so I generally take the volunteers.<br />
<br />
I always remind teachers, that while sketchnoting is "fun" for children they won't get better unless they are given ample opportunities to use it. I recommend that for at least a month, after the initial "how to" week, you give one assignment a week that involves producing a sketchnote and each Friday run one speed drill.<br />
<br />
Please note not all of your students are going to enjoy sketchnoting and that is ok. I think introducing students to different types of note taking is important and this is just one of many ways students can take notes.<br />
<br />
If you give this plan a try. I would love to hear how it went or how you modified it. <a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t-4mFYb6uho/X0yqiySk7JI/AAAAAAAAEps/DiEsCEjgnykCJJ9fvJxeq6GqfIuB2c-GACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="575" data-original-width="970" height="378" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t-4mFYb6uho/X0yqiySk7JI/AAAAAAAAEps/DiEsCEjgnykCJJ9fvJxeq6GqfIuB2c-GACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Picture1.png" width="640" /></a></div>
This summer I was testing out the full version of Loom and <a href="https://www.loom.com/share/97007d6326904d93936b32fabb336ed5" target="_blank">made a video</a> that tested out their limited online drawing tools and capability to create a link inside of a presentation.<br />
<br />
<div style="height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.22254758418741%; position: relative;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.loom.com/embed/97007d6326904d93936b32fabb336ed5" style="height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%;" webkitallowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>
<br />
The general idea is that I could share the video with students, prior to our first online meeting, and post to my Google Classroom for reference.<br />
<br />
I definitely liked that you could embed the link to the presentation on the video, using their <a href="https://support.loom.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002241117-Adding-a-Call-To-Action-button" target="_blank">"Call to Action" button</a>, but felt like, unless you explicitly told viewers to hover over the video (like I did at the end of the video above), viewers could easily miss that feature.<br />

I also found the online drawing tool to have a delay. That could have been an internet buffering issue on my end so I would need to retest that.<br />
<br />
Please note the drawing tools option is only available on the desktop app version - not the Chrome extension. The biggest problem with the desktop app versus the chrome extension is that the desktop app requires a download...and our teachers are prohibited from downloading anything to their district issued device without an admin login. So the desktop app is not feasible for teachers in our district unless they use their personal device and install the Microsoft Visual C + + required. I am definitely not excited about the download requirement particularly since the desktop app looks to be more robust then their extension.<br />

For a complete breakdown of Loom's features between their Free, Pro, and Desktop versions <a href="https://www.loom.com/share/93ca9787f96e4630b987cd84f3d66dc0" target="_blank">watch their video HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
Since Loom is offering their full Pro account FREE for educators (<a href="https://support.loom.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006579637-Loom-Pro-Free-for-Students-and-Teachers?fbclid=IwAR1_ohP-BqsSulhw2KNj7s4LrOtS0hwCJJ6MelSbX1d2s_Jd2FvaXifh5Do" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> for details) I recommend watching an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11pfvBNsXkA" target="_blank">overview video on YouTube</a> which helped clarify some editing questions I had when I was first starting out. Loom also has a useful <a href="https://support.loom.com/hc/en-us/categories/360000251678-Getting-Started" target="_blank">help center</a> with lots of great getting started instructions.<br />
<br />
Bottom line, Loom is a good simple to use free screencasting tool. The moveable camera bubble is my favorite feature and it has become my "go to" screencasting software <b>if I am opting to have my face on the screen.</b> For most of my screencasting needs I actually use screencast-o-matic because their editing tools are extensive and it is highly affordable (a three year subscription is only $36). I am just not a fan of the square camera picture in picture feature. It is my biggest wish that they develop a moveable round camera bubble option like Loom offers.<br />
<br />
