I have a class of third graders who has invited me help them with their Black History digital sensory figures next month and I am excited to try it.
After meeting with teacher we came up with a game plan.
Since this is supposed to be a fairly quick project (not taking weeks) so we decide to use the Itty Bitty Bios in Epic as their research tool. The books are quick reads and "should" give students enough information to fill out their graphic organizer.
Epic is an online digital library which has a FREE component for teachers and media specialists. You (and students) are able to use the online library as long as it is at school or in the library. It is not to be used at home unless students have a paid account. For more information about their FREE educator account CLICK HERE.
I put together an Epic collection of biographies for the project. This is the link to the collection that the teacher will assign to her Epic class - https://www.getepic.com/app/user-collection/8195662
I put 12 books in the
collection. Ten are for the students (five male and five female African
Americans…they can choose which ever they want…if two people want the same
person it doesn’t matter). If they want to pick a different book that is fine as well. The idea was to give them a starting point.
The two extra books are for modeling purposes. Personally I would do Rosa Parks whole group and then have them all do
Marian Anderson in groups of two to see what they come up with (and peer edit those whole group). Once
the teacher is satisfied they understand what is expected they can choose from the 10
remaining books. If she has time students could peer edit each other’s responses before they turn it into the teacher for final approval.
I created the graphic organizer for the project and I would have students choose five out of the six categories to answer (in case they run into an issue answering one of the "sensory" categories). I suggested perhaps some extra credit points or a treat for anyone who can do all six (well). If you need to tweak the graphic organizer you will need to click on "file" and "make a copy".
This is just a rough game plan...which we will tweak as needed. We guessed she would need one ELA block for the introduction and modeling. A second ELA block for students to work independently and a third ELA block to complete the digital end of the project.
I've made an instructional video to share with students in Google Classroom so they can work on their own. The idea is that I would only be needed to help with tech issues. That way the more tech savvy independent workers aren't slowed down by students who might need a little extra love.
